Question by Chomezburg: What macaw species would you recomend for someone who is expirienced in bird keeping and would like a macaw?
I’ve had cockateils, parakeets, lovebirds, etc. all good birds, knew how to train, feed, and play with them. Now I want a macaw! I think I could handle it, it won’t be easy, but I think I could handle. I’ve known about macaws and how to care for them for years, I literally think I know every tip, piece of advice, and warnings in the book. Just never had one. I heard how Hyacinth Macaws are “gentle giants” and how with training they came become the perfect pet. Would you suggest that, or something like a Scarlet Macaw? It doesn’t matter what extra care it needs, I’ll be able to provide it with all it needs and more, just need help finding a suitable species for me. I don’t believe in locking large adult birds in tiny cages, and I have about three large to medium rooms for them to be kept. One room I would like to place them in is a 12×8 foot room, as well as a partner.

Green Wing Macaws are very gentle and intelligent. If you want one of these Hyacinth Macaws, then you have to get them weaned, or they will die. Hyacinthine macaws are not susceptible to cooler conditions. Scarlet Macaws need lots of attention, but they are very talktive and intelligent. I suggest getting a Green Wing Macaw, it fits you!
Actually, all of the macaws fit your style [hehe] and you can get any. Hyacinth Macaws are bigger, and require more space then you listed. And never put two different species or males together…EVER!
Edit: Sorry, typed “parrot”…
